ABOUT
Formed in early 2023 after an ad at Z'otz Cafe went answered, Swinging Astrid have since begun to swing full force into the New Orleans DIY music scene.
The self-proclaimed “shimmer grunge” group, –composed of drummer Rob Florence, lead guitarist Jess Araten, bassist Clover, and lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Madeline Usher– draw inspiration from iconic 90s acts like The Smashing Pumpkins and Veruca Salt, carefully blending key elements of alternative and indie rock, shoegaze, and grunge.
Brought together by New Orleans's distinctive "biggest small town" charm, the band's final lineup was solidified in September 2024.
With an arsenal of vulnerable songs surrounding themes of trauma, humanity, and growing up a little “different,” Swinging Astrid delivers explosive and emotionally charged performances. Dear friend and frequent showgoer Margo Weese describes shows as “Enchanting, and it's music I gotta twirl to…like, there's this really dark and gloomy energy that's also really comforting. Like the moon, or like a weighted blanket.”
The band has quickly grown some local notoriety, recently playing a slew of shows at hometown favorite spots such as Siberia, The Goat, and Saturn Bar. They are currently in the process of recording their debut album, Nest.
